4S Introduction and Overview

David Swanwick provides an introduction and overview of the 4S Framework™ for Effective Client Communication and its components (scripts, stories, sketches, and supplements).

At Dimensional, we've developed an approach to communication that can help you elevate how you interact with clients. We call it the 4S Framework because it applies four key elements, scripts, stories, sketches, and supplements, to help make your communications more personalized, meaningful, and effective. You can use these elements to tailor your approach based on your environment and each client's interests and their learning style. Your scripts are the raw elements of effective communication. Using carefully thought-out words and phrases, you create talking points that can guide your client interactions. A script serves as a narrative outline to help you prepare for conversations and stay on message when responding to client questions. Stories help bring your words to life. You can use an example, analogy, comparison, or a longer story to help someone emotionally connect with your ideas, and you can structure and mold a story to suit each client's perspective. A sketch can help a client visualize a complex idea, especially if you draw the picture while explaining it. Your sketch doesn't have to be sophisticated to make an impression. Simple drawings work best. Supplements refer to materials that support and amplify your message. By combining slides, videos, articles, brochures, books, and other materials, and adding these to your scripts, stories, and sketches, you can greatly deepen a client's understanding of a topic. The 4S Framework is a unified system in which each element plays a role in shaping client interactions through effective communication techniques and your personal learning style. Dimensional has created resources to help you master the framework. Explore each section to see examples of using the 4S elements to address specific topics. You can also learn about additional 4S Framework training through Dimensional's applied communications workshops and in-office sessions customized to your firm. If you have any questions, please contact your Dimensional representative. Thank you.
